11 most expensive houses in York

I do love York. It really has everything you could wish for in a city: a railway museum, a Viking museum and city walls. But what about the most expensive houses in York? Do you have to be a multi-millionaire to afford them?

Well yes. To buy the most expensive house in York, your bank account needs to have at least six zeros at the end of it. Still, the million-pound mansions in York are still quite affordable compared to the most expensive houses in other cities like Manchester and Sheffield.

1. Purey Cust House, The Purey Cust, York – £4,000,000

The most expensive house in York sold for £4 million in 2018. It’s got the most desirable location in the whole city, opposite York Minster. It’s also the biggest house in York, with over 10,000 square feet of floorspace. This gives you a staggering 11 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. Weirdly they couldn’t find room to fit in a private pool or home cinema in all this space. Gorgeous interiors though.

2. Almery Garth, Marygate Lane, York – £2,750,000

The second most expensive house in York is this mansion with one of the most gorgeous iron conservatories I’ve seen. With 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms spanning 4,450 square feet it is also one of the best family homes on this list. Still, it doesn’t come with an indoor pool and home cinema like expensive homes in other cities do.

3. St Marys Lane, York – £2,200,000

This is actually a computer rendering of the £2,200,000 mansion in York and not actual photos. Still, it shows you how the 4 bedroom family home will look. At just 4,000 square feet (which is three or four times larger than most family homes) this is the smallest mansion on this list.

4. St Georges Place, York – £2,175,000

Look at this grand old mansion with shades of manor house. It comes with nine bedrooms across the 8,000 square feet of floor space – you could surely be renting these rooms out on Airbnb and making enough money to pay off the mortgage. The interiors scream old manor house and are not for everybody, but maybe you like them?

5. Clifton Croft, Greencliffe Drive, York – £2,030,000

This has to be one of the most plain expensive houses in York. The interiors are just so underwhelming that I wonder what kind of millionnaire lived here and yet didn’t do anything other than the bare minimum on the decoration. If you want a large house, then you get 9 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms spread over three floors.

6. The Lawns, Shipton Road, Clifton, York – £2,000,000

This expensive mansion in York has some beautiful interiors. I’m loving the kitchen and the bathrooms! You also get a huge garden to go with your home as well. Oddly, although the house has six bedrooms, it only has three bathrooms. So if you have a large family living here, the morning times will be a bit of a problem with everyone waiting for a bathroom to become free! I guess it makes sense in some ways because it’s one of the smaller mansions on the list at 4,200 square feet.

7. Shipton Road, York – £1,950,000

Just look at the size of the garden in this mansion, it goes on and on forever. Your nearly £2 million buys you six bedrooms and four bathrooms spread over 6,000 square feet. We don’t get to have a good look at the interiors unfortunately, but the kitchen looks high class and the bathrooms are really nice! Check out the bathtub situated on the landing. That seems a bit too much if you ask me!

8. St Saviourgate, York – £1,850,000

What is it with York and all the most expensive roads being named after saints? This mansion in the middle of the city is a great family home with five bedrooms and four bathrooms spread over 4,800 square feet. The interiors can best be described as traditional, with shades of aging parents. Not the most inspiring of decors, but with a lot of potential to create an incredible, modern home.

9. St Marys, York – £1,800,000

You know York must be posh when £1.8m only buys you a semi-detached home. Granted, that home is a five bedroom, four bathroom family home that is two or three times larger than a regular family home, but still. The interiors are pretty standard, nice, clean, modern, but not very inspiring.

10. Bootham, York – £1,750,000

The only thing I can focus on in this house is the baby pink kitchen island. Who thought that this would be a good idea! Fortunately the rest of the interiors are nice though. Would you keep the pink kitchen island or would you take that out? This huge mansion has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, so if you owned this house you know that you’ll be hosting the family Christmas every year.

11. Driffield Terrace, York – £1,670,000

While this house is not the biggest home in York, it does have over 5,500 square feet of living space. If you lived here you’d probably keep on losing your family members, it’s so large! There is a home cinema in this home, which is a rarity for expensive houses in York. The interiors are OK, I guess. Nothing really inspiring here.

Which most expensive house in York would you choose?

There’s quite a range of expensive homes to choose from in York. If you had the money, which one would you choose? Something in the city centre, or something a bit further out? Personally, I’d go for one near to the National Railway Museum, but that’s just me.
