14 most expensive houses in Oxford

If you like your houses to be old, dated, and totally lacking in modern amenities, then you’ll love the luxury house market in Oxford.

OK, that might be a bit harsh, but when I started researching the most expensive houses in Oxford, I couldn’t help but think that the interiors were very often…just crap. They looked like they were modernized in the 1980s or 1990s and then the owners just became too old to update it again and so they were left in a bit of a time warp.

This means that Oxford has a lot more in common with Cambridge, where the most expensive houses in Cambridge are also rocking the vintage look.

The most expensive area in Oxford is to the north of the city, neighbourhoods like North Oxford, Jericho, and Park Town. The most expensive roads in Oxford are Northmoor Road, Banbury Road, and roads around Boars Hill and The Ridings.

1. Foxcombe Road, Boars Hill, Oxford – £7,250,000

The most expensive house in Oxford is £7,250,000. This beautiful mansion just outside the city is on the exclusive Foxcombe Road. Built ten years ago it’s sure to make all your friends green with envy as they pull into your sweeping driveway past your exquisitely manicured gardens. The property itself spans a staggering 10,000 square feet and of course it comes with a private indoor pool, a modern home cinema room, gym and spa. It’s not loaded with bedrooms though, just five bedrooms and six bathrooms. You could give me this house and I’ll be happy.

2. Woodstock Road, Oxford – £4,850,000

Here we have our first most expensive house in Oxford that has a modernised interior. The decor choices are certainly that: choices. And I’m sure they were the right choices for the people that lived there, but floral wallpaper and the family coat of arms printed on the walls – that’s the exact opposite of what you want to do when you’re asking someone to fork over the better part of £5m. Still if you can get over the decor, you’ll get a house with 5,300 square feet, five bedrooms and three bathrooms.

3. Boars Hill, Oxford – £4,475,000

This house is brand new and ready to have your stamp on it. At 8,000 square feet it is one of the biggest mansions in Oxford. And because it wasn’t built 200 years ago, there are an equal number of bathrooms (seven) as there are bedrooms (also seven). Literally you could turn this place into an AirBNB cash cow if you were so inclined.

4. Linton Road, Oxford – £4,350,000

Hey, would you like to hand over £4.35m for a time machine? That’s exactly what you’d be doing if you bought this house. It comes with eight bedrooms and just three bathrooms. I reckon the nightmarish interiors have knocked off at least half a million from this place, what do you think? OK, not nightmarish, maybe Grandmother’s dream. From the outside, this really is a beautiful property in the heart of Oxford though.

5. Northmoor Road, Oxford – £3,950,000

From the outside and even on the inside this house might not look like much. But it’s sure to be in demand because it was the former home of none other than JRR Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings. He lived here in the 30s and 40s and wrote part of the epic story from this house. Overall I guess you could say that the interiors are plain and inoffensive. You do get 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms for your £4m though!

6. Northmoor Road, Oxford – £3,950,000

I have a theory. When you’ve handed over £4m to buy a 110 year old house like this one (it was built in 1911), you have to spend so much money to keep the four walls standing that the interiors and decor are a secondary problem. This mansion has seven bedrooms and just two bathrooms. Can you imagine if you had a full house at Christmas? You’d forever be in a queue to go to the toilet and Christmas dinner will be served around 10pm.

7. Belbroughton Road, Oxford – £3,850,000

What is it about millionaires wanting to buy expensive houses that have lots of bedrooms and no toilets? This property has seven bedrooms and just two bathrooms to serve them all. I mean, I live in a small two-bed flat in London and even that has two bathrooms. Why would anyone, ANYONE, want to spend nearly four million quid to wait every morning to use the bathroom? I ranted so much about the bathrooms that I’ve not got space to bring up the decor. But see for yourself. Buy it. Gut it. Start again.

8. Charlbury Road, Oxford – £3,750,000

From the outside, it’s a handsome house. Inside, yes, not bad either. Bright, modern, tastefully decorated. This 3,200 square foot home was built in 1911, comes with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It has a fantastic-sized garden as well. Yeah, this 100 year old house could make it to my shortlist of luxury homes to buy in Oxford.

9. Banbury Road, Oxford – £3,500,000

Another thing I’ve noticed about all these old, expensive homes in Oxford: Ugly rugs. I wonder if a lot of the owners are academics that made it to the top of the food chain in one of the Oxford University colleges. They have all the brains but zero design sense? For £3.5m you get 3,900 square feet of space, seven bedrooms and, for Oxford, an impressive five bathrooms.

10. The Ridings, Headington, Oxford – £3,200,000

You get a staggering 8,450 square feet of space in this huge mansion in Oxford, which is easily one of the biggest in the city. But of course, this home suffers from the old house curse: There are just three bathrooms to serve the nine bedrooms. Still, with 8,450 square feet and an enterprising builder, I reckon you could sacrifice sleeping space for white throne space.

11. Bardwell Road, Oxford – £3,000,000

If you want someone to look at the most expensive houses in Oxford and have them actually want to buy it, then this is how you go about doing the interiors. Light, modern, clean. Can you believe that this house is over 125 years old? It just goes to show that age is just a number, but the design choices are ones that you have to own.

12. Charlbury Road, Oxford – £3,000,000

Another expensive home in Oxford, more appalling interior design choices, more ugly rugs and a complete lack of bathrooms. Who is looking at properties like this and thinking: Yes, this is definitely worth my hard earned £3m? Maybe it’s you, reading this. If so, let me know in the comments.

Which most expensive house in Oxford would you choose?

I’m curious to know which expensive home in Oxford you’d choose if you’d just won the lottery and were in the market for a multi-million pound property?

Would you take something more modern and ready to move in? Do you like the vintage look that many of the mansions are rocking or would you buy it and rip everything out to start again?

Or perhaps your are a LOTR fan and you’d do anything to live in the home where the epic fantasy story was conceived and written.
